Hints You Are Being “Managed Out”
Some obvious and not-so-obvious indicators
In my limited experience, I rarely see people outright fired. Usually, they are “managed out”. As management, we discuss problem employees and ways to encourage them to seek greener pastures while keeping them productive.
I’m talking about technology, for the most part, or at least technology-related professions. Maybe a crappy scrum master is better than no scrum master, so you just try to manage them out.
In other situations, employers may be concerned about a lawsuit. Whether your minefield is racism, ageism, misogyny, or something else, if the target is a member of a protected group (or perceives themselves to be a member of one) then care must be taken to lead them to the conclusion that they should leave.
In any case, if you are the one being managed out, here are some common (and uncommon) indicators.
Subtle Responsibility Changes
A peer of mine managed a technology team. Our shared boss, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) had a “leadership team” made up of his direct reports and a few key managers down in his group.
