(When the recruiters won’t even bother to read your profile)

I don’t know where you stand on LinkedIn, but I consider it to be the scourge of Social Media.

Only because I thought it tasteless to show LinkedIn coming out the other end

It’s a sales and marketing tool, but I (sorta) digress.

If your experience is anything like mine, you are hounded by recruiters connecting with you for opportunities which aren’t quite what you are looking for. Maybe some are close, maybe they are way off. This is the (brief) story of how I was hired via a LinkedIn connection.

Most recruiters who reach out to my would do so with offers which would have been right up my alley two decades ago.

I know much of it is automation, so I think that’s why I started getting snarky with my replies: Have you even read my profile? What part of CISO, Head of Security, CSO and ISO sounds like I want to be “Security Engineer” or “Security Analyst?”

To their credit, almost every recruiter came back with an apology, and they quietly dropped off the face of my LinkedIn earth, never to be heard from again.

This problem became particularly pronounced a few years ago when I spent a year actively looking for a job. My boss and I didn’t see eye-to-eye, so I changed my LinkedIn profile to “open to opportunities” (or whatever that setting is) and made sure my…
