Five (and a Half) Things To Improve as a Manager
These aren’t easy, and they aren’t talked about.
I’ve been through a number of organizations in my professional (and non-professional) life, and had many bosses. I find it interesting as I talk to others how some professions are considered toxic across the board. Is it management’s fault or the people who are drawn to those professions?
You know what I’m talking about: The restaurant industry, fast food, department store/retail and many trades.
I am convinced that as a manager there are things you can do to improve toxicity. There are also limitations. For example in the fast food industry (and in today’s anti-work culture) you are going to struggle getting people to understand the value of showing up 5 minutes early so the person they are relieving can, oh, I don’t know, GET OFF WORK ON TIME.
You will often have to start at a much more macro level to reset culture, which is what many of my ideas below address.
So, what can you do? With a bias towards office work, but applicable anywhere, here is a starting point.
