A Teacher’s Advice That Shaped My Life
And the day I saw that advice come to fruition
A previous article of mine, “STFU — A Guide For People Who Talk Too Much” should be required reading for anyone who, like me, um… talks too much.
This is a tangent to that original guidance. As I wrote it I realized I had received a nugget of advice from a teacher when I was in the eighth grade which changed my life, but didn’t get me to STFU. THAT would come decades later.
Lemme ‘splain.
If you have any kids in your life, children of your own or your friends’, nieces, nephews or social groups, you will come across those kids (typically middle-schoolers) who try to be funny.
The results are, regretfully, predictable.
I have a few of the aforementioned kinds of people visiting this week, and I’m being hit with a constant barrage of nine- to twelve-year-old’s “witticisms” which fall flat.
Pondering their attempts to impress me (I guess) has reminded me of when I did the same thing.
When I say “same thing” I’m referring to making quips I thought were funny and no one else does. Now I’m funny…
